Admissions and Entry

English language requirements

To study at the University of Canterbury you must be proficient in English. There are different ways to provide evidence of your English language proficiency. Please note that we do not accept any evidence of English language proficiency that is more than two years old. If you are not certain of the evidence you need to provide, please contact us.

International Students at high schools in New Zealand

Students who gain University Entrance through NCEA provide evidence of their English language background by meeting NCEA literacy requirements - see University Entrance through NCEA for details. You cannot replace NCEA literacy credits with an English language test result. If you wish to apply for a Teacher Education programme, in addition to your level 2 literacy credits you need an IELTS (Academic) score of 7 with no section score below 7. Students who have studied in New Zealand for a minimum of two years at secondary school, and who have eight level 2 NCEA University Entrance literacy credits (4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing) are exempted from the IELTS requirement.
