Admission Ad Eundem Statum
This is admission on the basis of
- non-NCEA or
- overseas secondary school qualifications (including completion of an overseas school exchange), or
- prior study at an overseas university or
- at a non-university tertiary institution in New Zealand or overseas
Education Systems of Study
For many countries, qualifications that meet University entry requirements in that country also meet undergraduate entry requirements in New Zealand but you will need to apply for admission.

University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)
- Students studying towards an overseas equivalent of a New Zealand University Entrance qualification, e.g. CIE or IB, must ensure that they are eligible for University Entrance.
- You do not have to apply separately for admission if you have completed IB or CIE in New Zealand. You will need to apply to enrol.
- If you complete IB or CIE outside New Zealand, you will need to apply for admission.

| Returning secondary school exchange students |
If you have achieved at least 72 credits in NCEA Level 2, including a minimum of 14 credits in each of 3 subjects from the approved list, with a further 14 credits at level 2 taken from no more than two additional domains or ‘approved’ subjects on the NZQA framework (above), have achieved the literacy and numeracy standards for university entrance and can provide evidence of having studied overseas, post year 12, for a minimum of 20 weeks on an official exchange programme such as AFS or Rotary, you can apply for Admission Ad Eundem Statum. A supporting letter from the principal of the school you attended overseas is required. If this is not in English an official translation is required. How to apply for Admission Ad Eundem?
Admission to a Certificate of Proficiency
If you are not an incoming study abroad student, but intend to study for a period of time (one semester or one year) at the University of Canterbury (UC), and do not intend to complete a UC degree, you may apply for admission to a 'Certificate of Proficiency'
