University Entrance using NCEA

If you have nominated UC to receive your NCEA results we will receive your results from NZQA in January.

UC will ask for your university entrance qualification in your Application to Enrol. You are not required to make a separate application for admission if you have UE through NCEA.

To qualify for University Entrance through NCEA you need to have gained a minimum of 64 NCEA credits made up as follows:

Level 3
(or above)
(42 credits)

Subject A

14 credits from a list of approved subjects

Subject B

14 credits from a list of approved subjects
14 credits from no more than two additional approved subjects or from no more than two domains on the National Qualifications Framework

Level 2
(or above)
(8 credits)

Reading

English or Te Reo Maori -
4 credits
from the NZQA approved list of Standards

Writing

English or Te Reo Maori -
4 credits
from the NZQA approved list of Standards

 
  Note: these English credits cannot be replaced by an English language test result  

Level 1
(or above)

Mathematics

Students with NCEA Level 3 who achieve an entry score of at least 120 will receive Preferential Entry to UC. How to calculate your entry score from your NCEA Level 3 credits

Bursary

Students who studied at a New Zealand secondary school in 2003 or earlier, may qualify for admission to a university in New Zealand with the Bursary qualification by

  • gaining an A or B Bursary or
  • gaining at least 3 'C' passes and Higher school certificate
  • and proving evidence of English language proficiency. You may do this in one of the following ways:
    • being a native speaker of English
    • achieving a 'C' pass or higher in one of the following Bursary subjects: Accountancy, Agriculture,Biology, Classical studies, Drama, Economics, English,Geography, History, History of Art or Media studies
    • providing a satisfactory score in an English language test.

You do not need to apply for admission. However, you do need to apply to enrol.
