Information for Visiting Academics

If you are an individual coming to UC as a visiting academic, accommodation may be available on-campus for your stay.

If you are coming with a partner or spouse and/or a family – see "Information for Couples or Students with Families".

On-Campus Accommodation

Campus Housing

The University of Canterbury has a small number of fully-furnished houses and flats around the boundary of the campus available to Visiting Fellows and Departmental visitors. The properties are all within easy walking distance of all departments. Further details are on the Campus Housing website.

UC Accommodation Student Village

Depending on availability at the time, you can apply for accommodation in a self-catered apartment at UC Accommodation Student Village (Ilam Apartments, Sonoda Christchurch Campus, University Hall).

Ilam ApartmentsEach fully-furnished apartment has its own kitchen/living area, and bathroom facilities. You would have your own room with internet connection and share the apartment's facilities with up to 5 other academics or postgraduate students.

The weekly cost includes your power and phone (local calls only) and casual meals or meal plans are available at an extra cost if you choose.

Please contact the Accommodation Office for a booking form or for further enquiries email enquiries@ucastudentvillage.co.nz.

Private Renting

Sometimes UC academics are looking for staff to look after their own property while they are on sabbitical - check out the University's Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/ucnoticeboard

The Accommodation Office maintains a database of ‘Flatmates Wanted' and ‘Properties Available' through Student Rent which may help you find a suitable room or property.

As you should always view the property yourself before signing into any agreement or lease, you will need to start your search for accommodation after you arrive in Christchurch. You will therefore need to arrange temporary accommodation for your initial stay. Typically we suggest that you are able (and can afford) to stay for around 2 weeks – this should give you enough time to find a suitable property or room. Some possibilities are listed on our 'Temporary Accommodation' webpage.

If you have any queries regarding your accommodation options, please contact us in the Accommodation Office.
