Study Abroad and Exchange Programme Students

In conjunction with UC Accommodation Student Village, UC has developed a special accommodation package specifically designed for students on approved Study Abroad or Exchange programmes.

This package offers excellent value and is the most hassle-free option for most students, however acceptance of the arrangement is not mandatory.

Room placement is at the discretion of the General Manager/Director of Operations and while every endeavour will be made to place Study Abroad and Exchange students in the Hinau buildings, these rooms are subject to availability.

Students who do not wish to take this package can choose to apply for a standard semester in either a Kowhai or Manuka building. Please note that fees vary according to apartment type and accommodation will also depend on availability. Students can also apply for homestay accommodation or try private renting ('flatting'). Students on full academic year programmes (February - November) may also choose to apply for a place in another hall of residence.Hinau Apartment Bedroom

Availability Guarantee

UC Accommodation Student Village guarantees the availability of this accommodation package for all students coming on university-approved Study Abroad or Exchange programmes (verified by the University's International Relationships Office), provided that they complete the online application for accommodation by 1 December 2011 for first semester (February 2012 start) or by 1 May 2012 for second semester (July 2012 start).

However, all intending residents should note that the Offer of Accommodation (emailed out following receipt of the application by UC Accommodation Student Village) has a two week deadline for acceptance. Late return of the acceptance may result in the loss of the room. Applications received after the above deadlines will be offered accommodation subject to availability.

Application Procedure

Ilam ApartmentsAll students who would like to take up this offer must complete the online application form for accommodation before 1 December for first semester (February start) or by 1 May for second semester (July start).

Student details will be confirmed with the University's International Relationships Office and then applications will be processed.

All students should send their arrival details to the Accommodation Office to arrange an airport pickup. This must be done at least one week prior to departure.

Information on Swap Procedure with Australian Villages

UC Accommodation Student Village is managed by Campus Living Villages (a global company with student villages across Australia). Students may stay for no longer than 2 weeks in one other campus living village. The stay must be taken up either immediately before the start of the academic year (January–February) for those students arriving in Semester 1, or immediately following their last university commitment at the end of the year (November–December) for those students arriving in Semester 2.

Students should notify Ilam Apartments of their intention to request to take up the Village Swap at the time of application and complete the booking form. A booking form and further information is available by emailing a request to enquiries@ucastudentvillage.co.nz.

No guarantees can be given on availability for the swap. Where there is no availability at the village of first preference, the application will be forwarded on to the village of second preference.

Off-Campus Accommodation

For those students coming only for one semester, it can be difficult to find off-campus accommodation as most rental properties around the university area come unfurnished and have 52 week leases. Most halls of residence also give preference to full year applicants.

For students wishing to apply for homestay, please contact the Accommodation Office for an application form.

Please Note: The Christchurch rental market is tight at the moment and it is difficult to get private rental accommodation in most areas. Study Abroad and Exchange students are therefore advised to apply for accommodation at Ilam Apartments as outlined above or apply for homestay.
