Bishop Julius Hall

Taradale High School, Napier

Studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Natural Resources Engineering and a UC Emerging Leaders' Scholarship recipient

Moving to Christchurch from Napier, Tom was looking for a hall of residence for his first year at University. ‘It’s an introduction to University and living away from home, but still with people looking out for you, which allows you to focus on study,’ he says.

He chose to live at Bishop Julius Hall after looking around the halls at one of UC’s open days. ‘It seemed relaxed and friendly when the Principal showed us around. Also the size suited me, and the Hall’s academic results are good. We live around a fantastic courtyard, which draws us together to make lasting friendships. It’s a community I’m thrilled to be a part of.’

‘If you’re considering living in a hall, check how academically successful the past residents have been. Also consider key and recurring words in descriptions of the halls so you get the true picture.’

Tom is studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Natural Resources Engineering. He chose the degree because of his love of mathematics, science and problem solving. ‘This degree will teach us to take a systematic approach to managing a resource, taking a holistic view of the environment and other factors.’

Subsequently, UC was a natural choice of university. ‘It has a highly reputable Engineering faculty, Christchurch is a wonderful city and I have family close by,’ explains Tom. ‘I think the campus is great and the lecturers are very enthusiastic.’

When he is not studying, Tom likes kayaking, skiing and reading, and hopes that his career will involve plenty of overseas travel.
