Hall Life

ActivitiesBishop Julius Hall Recreation Area

The halls are all located in close proximity to the Ilam Sports Fields where many of the inter-hall and university sporting events take place.

Apart from team sports such as rugby, soccer, netball and hockey, there are also many other opportunities to join in sporting activities with students from your own and other halls.

Competitive occasions such as swimming sports, basketball and talent quests are organised by the halls' Executives and all the halls participate.

Some of the halls also have their own annual ball, as well as formal dinners and special events throughout the year.

During the Holidays University Hall Breakfast Bar

During university term and semester breaks, Bishop Julius Hall, College House and Rochester & Rutherford Hall can be booked to conference groups and are closed to most students. It is usually possible for students to stay on during these times, but students must inform their Hall Head in advance and will most likely be required to self-cater.

Students in University Hall, Sonoda Christchurch Campus and the Ilam Apartments have term and semester breaks within their contract lengths so students are not required to vacate their rooms.

Rooms are often available at the Ilam Apartments and sometimes Sonoda Christchurch Campus over the summer vacation period (December-January).

MealsRochester & Rutherford Hall Servery

All six halls of residence will offer fully-catered meal options in 2012 - Bishop Julius Hall, College House, Ilam Apartments, Rochester and Rutherford Hall, Sonoda Christchurch Campus and University Hall - providing three meals per day.

Sonoda Christchurch Campus is currently semi-catered. The 5-bedroom apartments have full kitchen facilities and a catered dinner provided on-site every night.

Ilam Apartments are currently self-catered only, which means that you prepare your own meals. However, if you prefer, meal plans at the nearby University Hall are available at an extra cost. In 2012 Ilam will also offer fully-catered and semi-catered meal options.

Staff

The Halls provide a safe and caring home for students in all stages of their university career. Apart from the Head of Hall, who is in charge of running the hall, there are many other staff to look after your needs - from the Residential Assistants (RA's), tutors and returning students, to the kitchen, cleaning, adminstrative staff, Bursars, Deputy Heads and Deans.

Everyone is there to make your hall and university experience one you will enjoy.

Stay Duration

All halls prefer to take students enrolling for the full academic year (February-November). However, Ilam Apartments may take students on approved study programmes who are coming for only one semester - this is subject to places being available.
