How to find a room or a rental property

As you should not sign up to a property without first viewing it, you may need to book some temporary accommodation for when you first arrive in Christchurch. You need to have a base from which you can search for a suitable flat to rent.

The Accommodation Office has a computer with internet access and a phone (local calls only) available for students to use to search for a flat.

Some of the ways to look for a room/flat or a rental property are:

Search the Student Rent flatting database for

This is a flatting database specifically aimed at students. Search for:

  • Room(s) in existing flats available for rent or
  • Whole properties available for rent

The properties listed on the database are not owned or operated by the University.**

Local Newspapers

Search the 'To Let' or 'Flatmates wanted' columns in the Saturday editions of Christchurch's newspaper "The Press" or the "Buy, Sell & Exchange" paper which is out on Fridays.

Other Websites

Use other websites such as Trademe, Flatfinder, NZFlatmates, Share-accommodation or Realestate for advertisements in the wider Christchurch area. Make sure you check all the terms and conditions in signing into properties from a website, there may be some hidden costs.

Property Management Agencies

Please note that you may be charged a fee to look at their listings and/or a letting fee when you sign up for one of their properties.
