Current research areas in Art History and Theory include modern and contemporary European and American art, aesthetics and art criticism, philosophies of art, 19th-20th European art, European art literature (art novels, art criticism and artist's texts), interdisciplinary topics linking literature and art, contemporary toi Maori, art practice and theory and the influence/relevance of Indigenous cultures, Maori representation and migration, twentieth-century New Zealand architecture: issues of national identity, the Gothic Revival in New Zealand, architectural heritage conservation, art and aesthetics of Japan, cross-cultural aesthetics, and the Japanese tea ceremony.
