Researcher Summary
A micro/nano-technology: Our research activities include studying the highly nonlinear dynamic behaviour of array systems applied to scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and nano-injection technology. A well established collaboration with the MacDiarmid Institute and the TU Ilmenau in Germany allows us to compare and to validate our theoretical findings against experimental investigations.
B civil structural dynamics: New Zealand has been at the forefront of base isolation technology. The following interactions play an important role in determining the seismic response of structures: soil-isolator-structure (SISI), soil-structure (SSI), structure-soil-structure (SSSI).
C piezo-technology: One active field in piezoelectric actuators is the research of miniature ultrasonic motor technology for nano-position control. The development of appropriate mathematical models that accurately describe their dynamics and controls mechanisms accompanies these research activities. Another active field of ours is that of smart structures e.g. imbedded in panels to enhance active noise control technology.
D flutter dynamics of bi-planes: Scientific works focus on monoplane analysis, leaving a satisfying understanding of the flutter dynamics of bi-planes orphaned. We focus on deriving suitable fluid-mechanical models that are able to describe the flutter instability of the bi-plane wing system. Our results are compared against wind tunnel tests as well as real flights of model aircrafts.
