Freshwater Ecology Research Group (FERG)

Research Group Summary

Freshwater ecology is an active area of research in the School of Biological Sciences. Charles Chilton and Edward Percival pioneered research on freshwater animals at the University of Canterbury, a tradition that has been carried on and extended by Vida Stout, Mike Winterbourn, and now Angus McIntosh and Jon Harding.

The research group has particular strengths in stream ecology, especially the ecology of invertebrates and their interactions with native and introduced fish, and the applications of stream ecological theory to the management of freshwaters.
